Big Basin and it's Redwoods

On our way down to Monterey, we drove through Big Basin and looked at the Redwood trees. Pictures don't do these trees justice. They are massive and strong and beautiful trees. Some of the trees have survived fires that literally burn a hole in the trunk, but they keep growing...like the one below.


A lot of times the tree splits. They share the same base and root system, but have two trunks. New trees can grow from a fallen trees old roots. New trees can grow after another tree has been cut or fallen. It will start right in the middle of the trunk.
